Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States, and heart attack is no respecter of age, gender or race.
Living a heart-healthy lifestyle, having regular physical checkups, and knowing your numbers — blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar — can help you avoid the consequences of heart disease and the devastation of heart attack.
“Early detection of risk factors is key to prevention,” said RMH Heart Health Navigator Maria Hostetter. “Knowing our risk allows us to take the right steps to prevent a cardiac event. That’s why RMH offers the Heart Check program.”
Heart Check is a comprehensive personalized screening for heart disease risk factors. The RMH Heart Check program
includes a one-on-one visit with Hostetter, who is an experienced cardiac nurse and health educator. Participants learn their risk factors for heart disease and are given the tools to address them, including exercise and nutrition information.
Hostetter provides practical information to help each person develop a personal cardiovascular disease risk reduction strategy.
“The information I give participants is tailored to uphold their individual vision and values and meet their personal needs,” she said.
Prior to their individual session with Hostetter, participants have blood drawn for lab work and complete a lifestyle assessment. Hostetter reviews the results of the lab work and the assessment with the participant, discusses the person’s current risks for cardiovascular disease and recommends practical steps the person can take to ensure a more heart-healthy lifestyle.
“Navigating those steps day in and day out requires mindful change and courage,” she says. “If you are ready to have an honest look at what that means for you, come for a consultation.”
RMH Heart Check is available to both men and women. The cost of a Heart Check assessment, which includes lab work, is just $50. For an appointment call 540-689-6000 or register online
