Director, RMH Corporate Communications
RMH Director of Health Information Management (HIM) Karen Phipps has been promoted to Sentara HIM Director of Coding, Audit and Clinical Documentation Improvement.
Phipps joined RMH in 2009. In her new role, she will coordinate and manage the HIM team for seven hospitals in the Sentara Hampton Roads Region and help lead the system-wide adoption of the ICD-10 medical coding system. ICD-10 conversion is required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to be completed in 2014 and involves a massive increase in the number of medical billing codes.
“I am very grateful for the RMH team and all the opportunities they provided me,” Phipps said. “I look forward to the opportunity given to me with the Hampton Roads HIM team, to learn new things, face new challenges and grow in my professional life.”
Phipps will also work with the Sentara Coding School. The school prepares inexperienced coders for the rigors of coding in the hospital environment.
“The Sentara Coding School is continually growing,” Phipps said. “It just started an outpatient coding class of fifteen students and will soon begin teaching inpatient coding. This school is especially important because of the ICD-10 conversion next year to meet the increased need for coders in a job market in which there is a shortage of qualified and experienced coders.”
Martha Jefferson Hospital HIM Director Jennifer Armstrong will act as the Blue Ridge Region director of Health Information Management (HIM), filling the vacancy left by Phipps.
Armstrong has been employed at Martha Jefferson Hospital since 2001, serving as director of HIM for five years. In her new role she will oversee the HIM departments at RMH Healthcare and Martha Jefferson.
“I have been really appreciative of everyone’s support for me in this new role,” Armstrong says. “We have a great team in the Blue Ridge Region.”
The Sentara Blue Ridge Region is comprised of Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville and RMH Healthcare in Harrisonburg Va.
