RMH Wellness Center to Host 5th Annual Fall Fitness Festival, “Fitness for Life,” Sept. 27

Family-focused activities, exercise classes led by an international fitness expert, health screenings, and talks by RMH physicians will highlight the RMH Wellness Center’s fifth annual Fall Fitness Festival to be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Center is located at 501 Stone Spring Road in Harrisonburg. The festival is free and open to the public and will feature free health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations, a golf clinic and a variety of children’s activities. Discounted Wellness Center membership opportunities will be available, as will refreshments and giveaways.
The festival will feature group exercise classes led by internationally known fitness professional Cammy Dennis. Fitness director for On Top of The World Communities Inc.,
Dennis has over 18 years experience in group exercise, personal training and lifestyle management, along with youth and senior fitness. She is a Master Trainer for GeoFitness and the creator of “CamJamKids,” an after-school activity program for children. Dennis is certified by ACE and AFAA and is a member of the SCW Fitness Education Faculty.
Proceeds from the group exercise classes (a minimum donation of $10 per person will be requested) and enrollment fees collected that day will benefit the RMH Children’s Weight Management Scholarship Fund to provide support for the Wellness Center’s Kid Fit and Teen Fit programs. These programs provide important exercise and nutrition education to children ages 6-17, focusing on the development of healthy lifestyle habits early in life.
Festival participants can take advantage of free health screenings, including blood pressure, pulmonary function, cholesterol and glucose. These screenings provide key indicators of overall health and wellness. Participants are encouraged to share their results with their primary care physicians.
“Hot Topics” is a new addition to this year’s festival. Cardiothoracic surgeon Steve Marra, MD, will speak on heart health and the new heart surgery program at RMH. Rheumatologist Don Martin, MD, will share important information related to arthritis.
“We’re very excited that these physicians can be a part of our festival,” said Melinda Kacer, interim director of the Wellness Center. “Heart disease and arthritis are important health topics in our community, particularly as the baby boomer generation reaches their mid- to late- 60s. We want to share information with the community on how to prevent and manage these prevalent health concerns.”
The festival will also offer an opportunity to donate blood. Donations made at the festival will support the RMH Blood Center, a division of Virginia Blood Services, to help meet the needs of RMH patients.
